Play Numerical tic tac toe free

Instead of marks you place numbers. One player holds 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. The other holds 2, 4, 6 and 8. Complete any line adding up to exactly 15 and you win, even on a line your opponent started. The number 15 comes from the 3x3 magic square, where every row, column and diagonal hits that total.

How to play

How to play Numerical

  1. 1

    The odd player holds 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 and moves first. The even player holds 2, 4, 6 and 8.

  2. 2

On your turn put one of your remaining numbers in any empty square. Each number gets used once.

  3. 3

Complete a row, column or diagonal that adds to exactly 15 and you win, whoever placed the other two numbers.

  4. 4

Fill all nine squares without a line of 15 and it is a draw.

Strategy

What actually wins games

  • The 5 is the strongest number on the board. In the magic square it sits dead centre, part of every line that reaches 15.

  • Keep track of what your opponent has left. A threat is empty if the number they need is already spent.

  • Watch lines you did not start. You can win on a line where they placed two of the three numbers.

Can you win it?

The odd player wins Numerical tic tac toe with perfect play. It is often confused with the pool picking game called 15, which is equivalent to Classic and ends in a draw. The board version is a different game.
